Data Backup

Are your files important to you? Are you looking for ways to retrieve them and prevent this from happening in the future? You’ve come to the right place.

Depending on how much you use your computer and how worried you are about your computer crashing, you should come up with a schedule to backup your files consistently. Here are some tools for backing up your files.

Geek-Aid® recommends you use a secondary hard drive from your computer’s to back up all of your files. Portable storage devices such as external hard drives and USB flash drives are cheaper than ever and can be extremely handy.

External hard drives are used for mass storage, backing up your entire computer or big files such as videos and programs. The desktop external hard drives have the largest capacities but require an AC adapter plug-in and are bulky – typically meant for home use only. Portable external hard drives are more convenient for travel but don’t have as much space.

Even more convenient than portable external hard drives are USB flash drives. They are about the size of your thumb, that’s why they’re also called thumb drives, and are great for backing up documents, photos and other small files. Thumb drives are incredibly cheap and are the easiest way to back up files.

A final option for backup is something just about everyone already is capable of doing. If you are working with small files (10 megabytes or less), you can easily save these files on your e-mail account by adding the file as an attachment and sending it to yourself. This process is a little cumbersome because it requires you to be able to get on the Web and access your e-mail to retrieve files.
