Safe Computer Practices

The computer has revolutionized the world, as has the Internet, but with that has come some new dangers to go along with the many benefits. Geek-Aid® would like to offer you a few pointers to avoid falling for scams and becoming a victim of identity theft and phishing attacks.

The golden rule is to never give away your password or personal information to any unknown requestor. Be wary of any email form an unknown sender, as criminals often post as legitimate businesses with misleading email addresses. In the case that you create an account with a fraudulent website, you can avoid losing privacy on all of your accounts by using different usernames and passwords.

A very common way viruses spread is through email. Never open an email from an unknown address, and never click on any unexpected attachments. If you use Microsoft Outlook, or any other email client that allows you to preview emails, disable this setting.

Make sure your computer’s firewall is turned on and there is an anti-virus software running in the background at all times. Firewall settings can be accessed from the control panel and anti-virus software can be purchased online and at computer or office supply retailers.

Also, be sure to follow our tips for virus prevention and data backup for further safe computer practices.

If you think your computer has a virus or if you’ve lost your privacy online, GeekAid® offers a 24-hour help line for any computer or network-related issues and can be reached by phone at 877-GEEK-AID or bellow for direct assistance.
