Product Review: LastPass Password Manager - 1.9 Stars
The LastPass company website says it’s the No. 1 rated password manager in the G2 marketplace, with users citing the program’s ease of implementation and ease of use. GEEK-AID’s LastPass review set out to probe those attributes and others, and while the team did find positives, unfortunately, the negatives outweighed them.
LastPass Password Manager Review: Pros
Here are a few positives that stood out during our LastPass review:
- Cross-platform compatibility – LastPass works on most browsers, mobile devices and desktops, making it easy to access credentials anywhere
- Password generation feature – It creates strong, random passwords quickly, which is useful for increasing account security
- Free basic plan – For users who just need a minimal service, the free tier plan offers limited but functional features
LastPass Password Manager Review: Cons
Despite those attributes, GEEK-AID testers and other online reviewers found even more drawbacks:
- Security breaches – LastPass has suffered multiple high-profile data breaches in recent years. The exposure of sensitive vault data makes it difficult to trust it as a secure service
- Communication after incidents – After breaches, the company took months to notify users, with a rolling timeline of revelations that led to additional thefts, according to research into the hacks. Transparency is essential in cyber security, and LastPass did not meet expectations
- User interface – Compared to its competitors, the app and browser extension look and feel outdated. The navigation for managing credentials is more confusing than it could be
- Performance – The browser extension often failed to autofill credentials or took so long to load that it slowed down workflows
- Customer support – When contacted about issues, the response took more time than expected and the answers were generic. It felt like as if the technician was just reading from their screen
- Price – Many LastPass competitors provide more reliable features at a better price
LastPass Password Manager Review: Results
LastPass ratings online show a downward trend following the recent data breaches. A password manager is all about security, and in this case, the trust factor seems too damaged to ignore. LastPass has some convenient features, but those appear to be overshadowed by security concerns, usability frustrations and a lack of accountability for updating, fixing and supporting the product. The online LastPass ratings tell the whole story.
Based on our experiences using the application, GEEK-AID doesn’t consider LastPass a top option. With so many alternatives available, there seems to be little reason to risk storing your most sensitive credentials with a company that has repeatedly failed its users.
